DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? If Michael Waltrip were to count up all the concussions he has sustained over a NASCAR career that stretches back nearly 30 years, he'd certainly hit 10 ? and probably keep going.
Safety measures since Dale Earnhardt's death in 2001 have gone a long way toward preventing head injuries, and NASCAR officials have taken steps to improve the way they identify and treat concussions. But Waltrip knows that won't undo all those hits he took in the 1980s and '90s.
"I whacked my head ? a lot," Waltrip said. "If you think about this, I showed up in '85, when it was relatively 'safe.' We thought we had it figured out. I raced all the way through 2001 when people were getting killed. And all through that time, I was hitting my head and knocking myself out and getting concussions and going to the hospital. And I don't know what that means to me in 10 years. But I know it's a concern."
The 48-year-old Waltrip gets uneasy when he hears stories about NFL players and other athletes who are having serious neurological problems after they retire, issues that a growing amount of research indicates may have been caused by repetitive brain injuries they sustained during their playing days.
Could that happen to him, too?
"I would be the perfect case study to see what's going to happen," Waltrip said. "Because I can go back and look at the races and count up times I was knocked unconscious that I can't count on both hands."
Five-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson says he has had two concussions racing stock cars, and probably many more racing dirt bikes when he was younger.
"We're not immune to concussions," Johnson said. "And certainly after severe concussions or being concussed several times, the numbers change. We know that. The dynamic is there. I think we've reduced the opportunity for it to happen, but ultimately, it can happen. I just think the odds are a lot better today than they've ever been."
Earnhardt's death in the 2001 Daytona 500 ? which came after drivers Kenny Irwin, Adam Petty and Tony Roper all were killed from similar head injuries ? forced NASCAR to get serious about safety.
Today, drivers must wear a head and neck restraint, while impact-absorbing SAFER barriers have been installed on racetrack walls and NASCAR completely redesigned race cars to reduce the risk of injury. Racing seats used to look a lot like passenger car seats; now they look more like something out of a spaceship, with foam-padded supports on each side of the helmet that barely allows a driver's head to move during a crash.
It's working. Going into Sunday's Daytona 500, there hasn't been a death in NASCAR's top three national series since Earnhardt's.
"If I'm Kasey Kahne or Kyle Busch, I don't have those concerns any more," Waltrip said. "We've got the cars and the tracks, we've got it all fixed. You can still get hurt. You're running 200 miles an hour. But the chances of getting hurt are slimmer. The chances of hitting your head and hurting it are really slim."
NASCAR officials say they've identified 29 concussions in their top three series since 2004 ? and only 11 of those happened in the past five seasons.
"Not huge numbers, when you see it," said Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR's senior vice president of racing operations. "But with each of those, each one's different, we've had to assess each one differently. Knock on wood, we haven't had as many to have to deal with."
And while there have been some drivers who experienced long-term effects from traumatic head injuries over the years ? including Bobby Allison, Ernie Irvan, Jerry Nadeau and Steve Park ? O'Donnell says NASCAR doesn't see any evidence of widespread health issues related to multiple head injuries, as the NFL and other sports are.
"There's always concerns for any driver that's been in the sport," O'Donnell said. "But in terms of drivers formally approaching us and saying, 'Hey, I want to talk about this or look at it,' we haven't seen that occur, in terms of what you're seeing in other sports right now. We'd certainly be open to working with anyone, if we see that, in helping to stop any trend that we saw."
In response to reports of football players, hockey players and other athletes having serious neurological issues in retirement, researchers at the Boston-based Sports Legacy Institute have studied brain tissue of deceased former athletes. They've found evidence of a degenerative brain disease known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy that has been linked to repetitive brain injuries.
O'Donnell said NASCAR officials have noticed.
"Absolutely," O'Donnell said. "It's something we pay attention to on any aspect of other sports, what they're doing. Can we learn from it? Can we implement some of these things? We're open to working with any other sport as well."
For now, veteran driver Jeff Burton is trying to gather as much information as he can about the long-term effects of concussions. Burton's father-in-law is a physician and has attended sports medicine conferences on his behalf.
"I think anybody that has any sense at all has to understand that it doesn't matter if you're playing football or hockey or racing a car, head injuries can have bad ramifications later in life," Burton said. "It appears to be the case. I think we are exposed to less of it. But at the same time, when we do have them, they can be big hits."
The 44-year-old Burton started racing in NASCAR's top division in 1993, well before the post-Earnhardt safety advances.
"I can tell you that in retrospect, there's been many times that I've had concussions," Burton said. "And the definition of concussion is a very widely used term, and how you actually define a concussion has changed over the years. But there's no question that with hitting concrete, not having (today's safety equipment), there's no question people had concussions. No question."
Waltrip said he blacked out after an accident in practice at Las Vegas in 1998, but kept it to himself.
"Hit the wall, got in the backup car, made a couple laps, went to the hotel, woke up the next morning, didn't even know how I got there," Waltrip said. "You could just fake people out back then. 'Yeah, I'm fine, I'm fine.' They didn't care. 'OK, you're fine.'"
Today, any driver involved in a significant accident must visit the infield medical center, where checking for signs of a concussion is standard procedure. If there's reason to suspect a concussion, the driver will be sent to a local hospital. From there, the driver will need to be cleared by a neurosurgeon with at least five years' experience in sports-related head injuries before he or she can race again.

Musical genres such as folk, blues, jazz, classical and world music, are in part valued by their supporters because they offer an alternative to the glut of musical distractions disseminated by the mainstream (i.e. monopoly capitalist) entertainment industry. Professional musicians and the enterprises that support them (recording companies, performance venues, festivals etc.), are driven to carve out niches for themselves in the competitive world of the cultural industries.
?One tactic is the genre-oriented award show, which provides recognition to artists and other players in a given segment of the music business. Whereas the mainstream Canadian music industry has been well-represented for decades by the glitzy JUNO awards, niche music awards are a relatively new phenomenon.
?Take the Canadian Folk Music Awards (CFMA) for example. The CFMA acknowledges that folk music takes on many forms and that contemporary artists are expanding the genre. It rightly aspires to recognize achievement in all the styles found within the multicultural world of Canadian folk and roots music.
?A glance at its sponsors provides an outline of the ?industry.? Prominent among the patrons are the copyright collective SOCAN (the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada), two government-funded arts agencies (the Canada Council and FACTOR), and the inevitable bank (TD in this case). ?The emcees oversaw the presentation of awards in 20 categories, and the event?s producers filled the spaces in-between with a talented lineup of performers. The full-house (about 400 people) was impressive when compared to Canda?s National Jazz Awards, which were last given out in 2009, and were cancelled largely due to poor attendance. Musicians gathered around the ?folk and roots? banner appear to have more cohesion, perhaps because they reflect stronger elements of Canadian nationalism (with a multicultural twist) than in the jazz community.
?The selection of gala performers showed that organizers were attentive to regional and cultural diversity as well as artistic accomplishment. Veteran Vancouver blues singer Jim Byrnes and guitarist-producer Steve Dawson led things off with some down and dirty blues. Maritimes singer-songwriter Rose Cousins, like Byrnes a previous CFMA winner, held the audience spellbound with her mix of sad songs nicely offset by an engaging comic banter. Toronto?s African gospel acapella group Soul Influence impressed with its sophisticated arrangements and tight harmonies. ?The big winners, with two CFMA?s each, were Nova Scotian Dave Gunning (Traditional Singer and New/Emerging Artist), whose songs frequently evoke working-class experience, Quebecois ensemble Genticorum (Ensemble of the Year and Traditional Album for Nagez Rameurs), and Canadian music icon Bruce Cockburn (Contemporary Soloist and Contemporary Album for Small Source of Comfort). Also noteworthy among the recipients was Indo-Canadian singer Kiran Ahluwalia (World Solo Artist for her album Am Zameen: Common Ground). In her acceptance speech Ahluwalia paid tribute to the contemporary multicultural folk festival. ?I learned to play music in India,? she told the gala crowd, ?but I learned to collaborate musically at the festivals in Canada, and to not be afraid of different styles and genres, to know that I had something to offer.?
?Amid all the congratulatory hoopla this observor was struck by the absence of a defining characteristic of the music in previous eras. Outspoken concern for social justice and opposition to militarism, as folk music historian Gary Cristall pointed out in his 2008 CBC Radio series ?The People?s Music?, was an important feature of the music when it came of age in the Fifties and Sixties. Groups like The Travellers and The Milestones arose out of left-wing organizations and unions. Singers like Bonnie Dobson (?Morning Dew?) and Buffie Sainte-Marie (?Universal Soldier?) were passionately anti-militarist. Does the ?people?s music? still exist in today?s folk and roots music community?
?In an age characterized by global economic and environmental crisis, attacks on the working-class, and unpopular imperial wars, but with growing protest including last Fall?s cross-Canada ?occupy? movement, how is it that the annual awards ceremony of the ?people?s music? fails to reflect the temper of our times? The Canadian folk music scene appears to be self-involved, perhaps a little complacent, even calculating, as if in fear of provoking the wrath of a right-wing federal government and jeopardizing the flow of its share of arts funding. ?
?One award winner?s album did carry political overtones, but you wouldn?t have known it, because its aggressive political content was ignored at the ceremony: Bruce Cockburn?s ?Small Source of Comfort.? ?Canadians have been inspired by Cockburn?s political stands in the past ? notably his 1980?s work that exposed the complicity of the IMF and World Bank in perpetuating underdevelopment, and the criminality of U.S.-sponsored counter-revolutions in Central America. It?s disappointing that this talented musician openly supports Canada?s role in the U.S.-NATO imperial war in Afghanistan.
?CFMA judges honoured an album with an instrumental piece called ?Comets of Kandahar? that perversely likens a celestial phenomenon ? historically replete with mythical portent ? to the glowing tailpipe cones of NATO jet fighters in the evening sky. Another song, ?Each One Lost,? displays a compassion for fallen Canadian soldiers that?s sullied by a chauvinistic declaration: ?some would have us bow in bondage to their dreams of little gods who lay down laws to live by.? To this insult Cockburn condescendingly adds ?all of these inventions arise from fear of love and open-hearted tolerance.?
?Cockburn?s pro-imperialist drift is a barometer of our current malaise. It reflects the contradictions within the contemporary Canadian peace movement as well as the opportunist drift of the NDP towards collusion with an aggressive military bloc that it had long (and rightly) opposed. There is urgent need for a nation-wide conversation about Canada?s commitment to the NATO war machine. Otherwise there will be many more ramp ceremonies for Canadian soldiers, not to mention countless grieving relatives of the victims of our firepower. A folk music community that reaffirmed its historic roots in the fight for peace and social justice would play a significant role in that conversation.

NEWTON, Mass. (AP) ? Joseph Kennedy III officially launched his campaign for the U.S. House on Thursday, embracing his family's legacy in Massachusetts while also acknowledging that name alone will not assure him electoral success.
"You've got to earn it," Kennedy told reporters after greeting commuters at a train station in Newton, the first of several stops the Democrat planned to make in the reconfigured 4th Congressional District. "You've got to go out every day and talk to people, listen to their concerns, shake more hands, knock on more doors, take more phone calls."
Kennedy, 31, is seeking the seat held by the retiring U.S. Rep. Barney Frank. He released a three-minute video announcement on his website early Thursday before heading out on the tour that also will take him to the largely blue-collar communities of Milford, Attleboro, Taunton and Westport.
The first stop was on largely friendly ground in the upscale Boston suburb. The redheaded son of former U.S. Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy II and grandson of the late Robert F. Kennedy frequently flashed a trademark Kennedy-esque grin as he strode along the train platform and chatted up riders waiting for inbound trolleys to the city.
"We've got a long way to go," he told one man who then remarked that a friend knew one of Kennedy's uncles, a nod to the many personal and political connections Massachusetts voters still have toward the family.
"He's a Kennedy ? no coat," pointed out one older supporter who wore a Kennedy sticker. John F. Kennedy famously doffed his overcoat on a bitterly cold day during inauguration ceremonies in Washington, D.C., in 1961. The late president's great-nephew wore a dark blue suit and tie on a chilly but not unseasonably cold morning more than half a century later.
Kennedy's official announcement was largely a foregone conclusion after he said last month that he was forming an exploratory committee to run for the seat. He later resigned his job as a prosecutor in Middlesex County and moved from Cambridge, outside the 4th district, to Brookline, within the district. He has already been endorsed by two major labor unions and a recent poll showed him with a commanding early lead over Republican Sean Bielat, who lost to Frank two years ago and is running again.
While the Kennedy name remains a powerful force in the state, Republicans are quick to point to U.S. Sen. Scott Brown's surprising victory over Democrat Martha Coakley in the special election that followed U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy's death in 2009.
Edward Kennedy had held the seat for nearly a half century, and John F. Kennedy had held it before his brother. The Republican Brown carried several of the communities in the 4th district in the special election.
"I just think the Kennedy name is not enough to elect somebody," said Mary Thomits, a retired teacher from Brookline who said she "shocked" Kennedy when he introduced himself to her Thursday at a diner near the transit station by telling him that she did not think he was qualified to run.
Thomits, who said she was an independent but planned to vote for Bielat, said she was turned off by the fact that Kennedy was being opportunistic by changing his residence to run in the district. "I think he's just riding on his name," she said.
But Mike Grossman, a 56-year-old Newton resident, said he welcomed Kennedy's candidacy. Though an independent who had voted for Republicans in the past, Grossman said the Kennedy family had a "legacy" that was positive for the state.
Kennedy defended his qualifications for office, pointing to his experience as a volunteer in the Peace Corps, as legal aid attorney and prosecutor as evidence of his concern for the disenfranchised.
"I think I've had an opportunity over the course of my life to see what happens to people who are playing against a stacked deck," he said.
Kennedy said he was proud of his family's long record of public service, but his only specific reference to a family member during his first campaign exchange with reporters came on a question about the current partisan deadlock in Washington. He remarked that Edward Kennedy, while being known as a "liberal lion," was also able to reach across the aisle and forge strong working relationships with Republicans.
"One of his best friends in the Senate was (Utah Republican) Orrin Hatch," he said.

Networking events are often viewed with suspicion by those unfamiliar with them. It?s easy to assume these gatherings are packed with people trying to sell to one another over a meal or drinks.
While it?s true that some of those attending networking meetings are solely looking for business, the majority take a much broader approach. They want to meet people for a variety of reasons, including:
- To find potential business partners
- To meet experts on subjects that will be useful to them
- To make informal contact with others in the same or similar businesses
- To discover new ideas or opportunities

As with everything you do in business, it?s important to know why you are doing it. When it comes to networking, the purpose of going to your first meetings could be as simple as ?to see what it?s like?.
Some networkers set themselves clear targets such as to talk to three new people or to give away a certain number of business cards.
Others are looking to make contact with people who have specific knowledge, such as a tax specialist or someone who understands a particular commercial process. While it?s possible to track experts down through the internet, some prefer a more personal approach.
2. Focus on two or three networks
When you look into the networks operating in your area you could quickly be overwhelmed by the number available. The most effective way to use them is to focus on a small number, learning how they work and what they offer. Over time, you could then choose to move on to others.
Decide what type of networks interest you. Some are very local; others are specifically for women in business. There are networks which meet weekly, monthly or more occasionally. Some have very structured meetings while others are very informal.
3. Develop a succinct description of what you offer
While those you meet at networking events will not want to be sold to, they will ask what you do. This is an opportunity to present your business, and the most effective way to do this is in terms of what it offers to customers.
It pays to plan ahead for answering questions about your business, particularly if it can be complicated to explain, or if it?s particularly common.
A good description will prompt the listener to ask more questions. If you describe yourself as an accountant or the owner of a printing firm, the listener will assume that they know what you do. But say something like ?I help firms to pay less tax? or ?my firm helps others to get noticed? and you?ll probably be asked for an explanation.
4. Be prepared to speak at events
Many networking meetings involve a short presentation from one of their members. It could be anything from two or three minutes to half an hour or so.
While these are not usually the right place to make a sales pitch, they give the speaker an opportunity to demonstrate their expertise in a specific area. A graphic designer might give tips on how to make a flyer more visually attractive, while a recruiter could give advice on interview technique.
Taking the opportunity to speak at events will raise the profile of both you and your business.
5. Measure the return on your investment
It?s important to understand the value that you get from networking. This could be as simple as having contact with other business owners, or as specific as measuring the level of income that your networking brings in.
How you choose to measure the return in investment is a personal choice. But it?s important to do it, because you are putting in time and probably some money. You want to be sure that your business networking is as effective as possible.
